Carl Schnebel

Carl Schnebel (born March 26, 1874 in Zabern , † after 1939 ) was a Berlin press draftsman , caricaturist and illustrator and chief editor of the Berliner Illustrirten Zeitung after 1900 .

Life

Schnebel was possibly the son of the railway builder Karl Schnebel (1841–1900), who was in Zabern in Alsace in 1874. He was a pupil of Normann at the Academy in Berlin and shortly after the turn of the century was hired by Hermann Ullstein, the son of the founder of the Ullstein Verlag , as an "artistic adviser", a position that did not exist before. In the exhibitions of the Berlin Secession he exhibited some works.

Together with Ernst Growald , he opened the "Growald & Schnebel Poster School" at Kurfürstendamm No. 214 on October 1, 1904. As a prerequisite for participation, the students had to have "drawing skills". The lessons extended over three months with four hours per week each, with lectures, teaching and practice courses in writing and painting being offered.

In the 1910s, the painter developed a color measuring device that included a color circle. This apparatus was presented on October 2, 1911 in Weimar at a committee meeting of the Deutscher Werkbund . The description says about the "color harmonization apparatus":

“The patented device consists of a color circle about 1 m in diameter, the circumference of which is divided into 96 degrees. The colors are arranged in such a way that the spectrum goes around. The largest middle ring, starting from the lightest tone in the middle, contains the purest spectral colors mixed with white, followed by 4 more concentric rings with mixed gray in different depths. For measuring or finding a color shade, a disk is used from which a sector is cut out, which is divided into 45 parts from the center, so each color can be determined by degree numbers and sector numbers. "

He was a well-known illustrator and nestor of German press drawings. He was also the founder of the Menzel Prize . Most recently Schnebel was chief editor of the magazine Dame and the Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung . He retired on March 31, 1937. To honor him and to promote particularly talented young press draftsmen and illustrators, his publishing house donated the Carl Schnebel Prize.

Carl Schnebel Prize

The Carl Schnebel Prize was first awarded by Deutscher Verlag in 1939 for “an outstanding illustrative or press drawing achievement of a serious or cheerful character” in the publications of the publisher's last 12 months. The prize was awarded annually in July, but twice in 1939, as two years had passed since Schnebel had left active business and no prize had been awarded in 1938.

The decision about the winners of the award was made by the Deutsche Verlag Schnebel itself. The award was endowed with a prize of 2000 Reichsmarks .
