Carl Zehr

Carl Zehr (* 1945 in Baden , Ontario ) is the former mayor of the city of Kitchener in the Canadian province of Ontario, which was called Berlin until 1916 . Zehr resigned from his post in February 2014 after 17 years in office. He was succeeded by the Croatian Berry Vrbanovic, who was previously a member of the city council.

Zehr is married, has two grown children and four grandchildren.

career path

After attending the Mennonite College in Kitchener and the District College of Waterloo-Oxford, he was approved as an auditor (CGA) in 1972. In this role he was u. a. at Mercedes Developments, at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital and at the University of Waterloo . 1981–1988 he was a partner in the law firm "Mercer, Hildebrand and Zehr".

Political career

1985-1994 he was a councilor in Kitchener. From 1988-1994 he was also Regional Councilor of Waterloo. He has been Mayor of Kitchener since 1997. He was re-elected four times. This makes him the longest-serving mayor and one of the longest-serving city leaders in Canada. In 1990 Zehr ran for the Ontario Liberal Party in Kitchener-Wilmot in the provincial elections, but was defeated by the candidate of the Ontario New Democratic Party , Mike Cooper .

As mayor, he ensured the improvement of the city's infrastructure and the quality of life of its residents through communal facilities, health and recreation centers, environmental projects and the promotion of art and culture. Kitchener is famous beyond Canada's borders for its annual Oktoberfest , the second largest after Munich .

Honors

Zehr received numerous awards for his work as mayor and for his charitable work.

Memberships

Zehr is a member of several boards of directors, such as the water utility Kitchener Hydro, the University of Waterloo and the housing association Kitchener Housing Inc.
