Carl von Merode
Carl Freiherr von Merode (born June 15, 1853 in Mödling , Lower Austria , † October 26, 1909 in Vienna ) was an Austrian genre painter .
Life
Carl von Mérode came from the Belgian noble family Merode . From 1870 to 1876 he was a student at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts , from 1873 with Anselm Feuerbach . He was a member of the Vienna Art Cooperative. In 1891 he was a juror at the Berlin anniversary exhibition. Together with the landscape painter Adolf Kaufmann , he founded a “painting school for women” in Vienna around 1900.
In his works, Carl von Merode preferred market scenes and humorous situations from Viennese folk life. He has received numerous honors and awards for this.
Carl von Merode was the father of the French ballerina and variety dancer Cléo de Mérode .
