Carla Laemmle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carla Isabelle Laemmle (born October 20, 1909 in Chicago , Illinois - † June 12, 2014 in Los Angeles , California , also Carla Lenard and Beth Laemlle ) was an American actress and dancer of German descent. She was the niece of Universal's founder Carl Laemmle .

life and career

Carla Laemmle was born in Illinois , the niece of Carl Laemmle, founder of the film studio Universal Pictures . Carla's father Joe and her uncle were Jews and originally came from Laupheim in Württemberg , but had emigrated to the United States at a young age. At the suggestion of their uncle, the family moved from Illinois to Hollywood , which was still under construction at the time, in 1921 , because the climate there was milder for father Joe, who was suffering from health problems. The family moved into a house on the Universal Pictures site. In 1925, the then 16-year-old Laemmle made her film debut in the horror film The Phantom of the Opera in a minor supporting role as a prima ballerina . Because this film and some of its subsequent films were still silent films, Laemmle was one of the last living actors of the silent film era shortly before her death.

Carla Laemmle began a career as a singer and dancer, but rarely came out on minor supporting roles. Perhaps her most important appearance was in the universal horror classic Dracula (1931) alongside Bela Lugosi , in which she speaks the first words of the film in the role of a reading woman in a carriage. In 1939 she withdrew into private life after twenty films.

Only when she was old did Carla Laemmle appear in public again. In 2001 she briefly returned to the camera as a vampire in The Vampire Hunters Club . She was asked as an interviewee because she was one of the last living witnesses of Hollywood's early years and had memories of film stars like Lon Chaney senior and Laurel and Hardy . At the age of 100 she had another film comeback in the comedy Pooltime and played supporting roles in several smaller Hollywood films until her death. In 2011 the biographical documentary Among the Rugged Peaks: The Carla Laemmle Story was released . After being in good health to the end, she passed away at her home in Los Angeles at the age of 104.
