Carlo Chiostri
Carlo Chiostri (born May 5, 1863 in Florence , † July 9, 1939 there ) was an Italian artist and illustrator . He was best known for his illustrations of fairy tales, including the illustrations of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi .
Federico Fellini said of Pinocchio and his illustrator:
- I loved that story very much as a child, of course, but I still like it today. I sat dreamily above her and stared at the melancholy, ghostly figures of Carlo Chiostri. They also underlined the sad side of this book, its aftertaste of the bad dream, that feverish tremor.
In addition to Pinocchio , he illustrated over 200 books, mainly for the publishers Salani, Bemporad and Nerbini, including Victor Hugos I miserabili (“The misery”), Alessandro Manzoni's I promessi sposi (“The bride and groom”) and Silvio Pellicos Le as fiction works mie prigioni (“My Prisons”) as well as from the area of fairy-tale Luigi Capuanas Schiaccianoci and Il raccontafiabe and Emma Perodis Al tempo dei tempi .
He was the father of Sophia Chiostri (1898–1944) who is known as a postcard artist. He had another daughter named Evelina.
