Carlo Ruini, Anatomia del Cavallo ( Italian : "Anatomy of the horse")

Carlo Ruini (* 1530 in Bologna ; † 1598 ) was the author of one of the most important veterinary works of the 16th century, the Anatomia del Cavallo (Anatomy of the Horse), first published in 1598 three months after his death .

Ruini was a senator from Bologna and the scion of one of the city's distinguished families. He did not attend the prestigious University of Bologna , nor did he enjoy any medical or anatomical training; it is not known whether he enjoyed artistic training.

The work is considered a milestone in veterinary anatomy and in particular equine medicine , which was strongly influenced by the works of Andreas Vesalius and was only surpassed in the second half of the 18th century. Nevertheless, the direct influence on contemporary veterinary medicine practice was small, the effect on the specialist literature was limited to often poor quality plagiarism and copies for a long time, only through numerous translations and reprints up to the 18th century could the work slowly gain acceptance.
