Carlo Salvioli

Carlo Salvioli (born November 2, 1848 in Venice , † January 29, 1930 in Mirano ) was an Italian chess player and endgame theorist .

Salvioli made merits in popularizing chess in Italy. He directed chess columns in various magazines such as the Turin Gazzetta litteraria and the Venetian La Gazzetta del popolu della Domenica . He published theoretical articles, analyzes, commented on games, studies and was editor of the monthly magazine Nuova Rivista degli scacchi for a long time .

White seems to be lost. So after 1. Ke3 – f3 g5xh4 2. g3xh4 f6 – f5 3. e4xf5 Ke5xf5 Black wins. The farmer's breakthrough is correct

1. g3 – g4! h5xg4 or 1.… g5xh4 2. g4xh5 h4 – h3 3. Ke3 – f3 f6 – f5 4. h5 – h6 Ke5 – f6 5. e4xf5 etc.

Despite the publication of this study, such a breakthrough in tournament practice is mostly overlooked, even by chess masters.

Chess player

In 1881 he won the Italian Torneo Nazionale in Milan; he took third place in Venice in 1883 and a joint fourth place in Rome in 1886. In 1920 he was briefly president of the Italian Chess Federation.
