Carlos Fernández Gondín

Carlos Fernández Gondín (born July 1, 1938 in Santiago de Cuba , † January 7, 2017 in Havana ) was a Cuban politician , military and revolutionary . He was a co-founder of the Communist Party of Cuba and a member of its Central Committee . Most recently he was division general and interior minister of Cuba.

Live and act

Born in Santiago de Cuba in 1938, Carlos Fernández Gondín joined the Cuban rebel army in 1958 on the Second Front in eastern Cuba under the command of Raúl Castro . After the revolution, he initially worked in various positions in the Cuban armed forces and in the Ministry of the Interior . In 1962 he took part in the fight against the Bay of Pigs invasion . Later he took part in the military operation in Angola .

In 1993 he became a member of the Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular and a member of the board of directors of the Association of Fighters of the Revolution . In October 2015 he was appointed Minister of the Interior to succeed Abelardo Colomé Ibarra . In this position he was one of the main people responsible for the surveillance and prosecution of opponents of the regime .

Fernández Gondín died on January 7, 2017 at the age of 78 from complications from a chronic illness. His urn is buried in the mausoleum of the 2nd Eastern Front near Mayarí Arriba in the municipality of Segundo Frente . His successor in the office of the interior minister was his former deputy Vice Admiral Julio Cesar Gandarilla , longtime chief of counterintelligence .
