Carlos Franzetti

Carlos Alberto Franzetti (born June 3, 1948 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine pianist, composer and arranger living in the United States .

Live and act

Franzetti learned music from the age of six at the National Conservatory in his hometown; later he had private piano lessons. After moving to Mexico in 1970, he began studying composition. In 1974 he moved to the United States and graduated from the Juilliard School in New York City , where he continued his composition studies with Vincent La Selva and formed the fusion band The Prime Element . He worked with Joe Farrell , Mercedes Sosa and Chaka Khan . With Paquito D'Rivera he received a Grammy in 1997 for the album Portraits of Cuba , the music of which he arranged; he also directed the orchestra.

During his career, Franzetti created symphonies , concert music, operas , chamber music and music for big band - jazz . With his wife, the pianist Allison Brewster Franzetti, he recorded the album Alborada in 2011 . He had already recorded another duo album ( Duets ) in 2009 with bassist Eddie Gomez . He has also arranged for The Boston Pops , Brooklyn Philharmonic and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra .

Franzetti has also composed numerous film scores, best known for The Mambo Kings (1992) with Robert Kraft , and for La Película del Rey (1986) by Carlos Sorín . He directed the orchestra for Sidney Lumet's film Q & A (1990).

Awards

His album Tango Fatal won the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best Tango Album . In 2003 his album Poeta de Arrabal received two Grammy nominations ( Best Classical Crossover Album and Best Instrumental Arrangement ). The Paquito D'Rivera album Portraits of Cuba , which also won a Grammy, was created under his direction . Franzetti received two gold records .
