Carlos Galvao de Melo

Carlos Galvão de Melo (born August 4, 1921 in Buarcos , Figueira da Foz , † March 20, 2008 in Alcabideche ) was a Portuguese officer and protagonist of the Carnation Revolution .

The eldest of nine children of António Augusto Ferreira de Melo and his wife, Cecília Rosa Teles de Noronha Galvão, was a member of the Air Force as a colonel of the Air Force after the April 25, 1974 coup that swept away the Estado Novo regime and brought democracy to Portugal seven-member Junta de Salvação Nacional . He soon became known as one of the most conservative, if not reactionary, members of the junta .

Classified as a far-right politician, he ran for the 1980 presidential election in Portugal, but received only a small percentage of the vote.

In the 1990s he was the focus of controversy over his support for the annexation of East Timor by Indonesia .

The twice married had six children from his first marriage. In 1989 he was awarded the Grand Cross of Merit with a star by the Federal Republic of Germany .
