Carlos Obregón Santacilia

Carlos Obregón Santacilia (born November 5, 1896 in Mexico City , † September 24, 1961 ) was a Mexican architect and is considered one of the pioneers of modern Mexican architecture.

biography

Obregón was the seventh of ten children of the doctor Lauro Obregón and his wife María Santacilia y Juárez , the eldest granddaughter of the President Benito Juárez . From 1916 he studied architecture at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes . In 1924 he graduated with honors from Carlos Lazo , Manuel Ortiz Monasterio , Manuel Ituarte , Eduardo Macedo y Arbeu and Martínez del Cerro on the subject of "Education Center" .

As an architect, he planned around 150 buildings at home and abroad until his retirement in 1960, including some famous buildings in Mexico City, including the Monument of the Revolution . Later well-known architects worked under Obregón, such as José Villagrán García , Enrique del Moral and Juan O'Gorman . He was three times president of the Mexican Association of Architects and has also received awards from the Brazilian , Chilean and Cuban governments.
