Carlos Roberto Reina

Carlos Roberto Reina (born March 13, 1926 - August 19, 2003 ) was President of Honduras from 1994 to 1998 .

Reina belonged to the left wing of the Liberal Party and had a long career as a diplomat and human rights activist , including being ambassador to France from 1960 to 1963 . On January 27, 1994 he became the new head of state and government of Honduras. He promised in advance to fight poverty, corruption and human rights violations, as well as to reduce the influence of the military and to create social institutions. During his tenure as president he tried to fight corruption and abolished conscription as part of the renovación moral , the moral renewal, which he propagated . In 2003 Reina committed suicide with the pistol, he was seriously ill with cancer.

Reina's successor was Carlos Roberto Flores Facussé , who let Reina's renewal program come to nothing.
