Carmen Schrader

Carmen Schrader (* 1913 in Grethem ; † 2012 in Córdoba ) was a Spaniard who, together with her husband José Ruiz Santaella, a Spanish diplomat, protected three Jewish women from persecution by the National Socialists and therefore belonged to the ranks of the Righteous Among the Nations has been recorded.

Life

Carmen Schrader was born in Grethem, Lower Saxony , in 1913 . In 1936 she married José Ruiz Santaella and together they spent a few years in Spain . Then Ruiz Santaella was appointed agricultural attaché at the Spanish embassy in Berlin , which is why the couple moved to Berlin in 1942. In 1943 they moved with their four children to the home of a noble family in a nearby village. There they hid Gertrude Neumann, who sewed for them, in 1944, and hired the children's nurse Ruth Arndt and her mother Lina Arndt under false names as nanny and cook, thus protecting them from persecution by the National Socialists until José Ruiz Santaella in September of the same year was transferred to Switzerland . In 1988 Carmen Schrader and her husband José Ruiz Santaella were awarded the title Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem . Carmen Schrader died in Córdoba in 2012 , where she had spent most of her life.

Relationship with the Arndt family

“The Arndt family was one of the few Jewish families in Europe in which all family members survived the Shoah .” For several months, Carmen Schrader and José Ruiz Santaella hired Ruth and Lina Arndt under false names and “sent their family, who were hiding in Berlin, food cards ". Carmen Schrader and Ruth Arndt stayed in contact until Carmen Schrader's death.

  1. Carmen Schrader was born as Waltraud [Albert 2012] or Waltraut [Yad Vashem o. J.] Schrader and changed her first name to Carmen [Albert 2012] at their wedding. According to the Spanish tradition of giving family names, she is called Schrader Angerstein, or Schrader for short, after the last names of her parents.
