Carol A. Mutter (born December 17, 1945 in Greeley , Colorado ) is a former Lieutenant General in the United States Marine Corps . She was the first woman to be called to the rank of major general in the Marine Corps and the first woman in a row to the rank of lieutenant general in the entire United States Armed Forces .

Mother studied at the University of Northern Colorado Mathematics . After graduation, she joined the Marine Corps in 1967. Mother was u. a. active as trainer and platoon commander. She later became the first woman to take on the post of space director within the US Space Command and also a tactical command as deputy chief of staff of the III. Marine Expeditionary Force held. In 1999 she resigned from active service.

After that she still works in various commissions, including a. in the American Battle Monuments Commission .
