Life

After graduating from high school in Cologne in 1852, Richard Peters went to the Royal Industrial Institute , where he studied chemistry and metallurgy. In July 1855 he finished his training. In 1855 he was chairman of the academic hut association , and one year later he worked as an engineer at Henrichshütte in Hattingen . In the same year he founded the Association of German Engineers (VDI) with like-minded people in Alexisbad and became a member of the board. In the same year he chaired the constituent meeting of the Lower Rhine District Association of the VDI on August 24th in Düsseldorf. In the following year, Richard Peters initiated the founding of the Westphalian district association of the VDI. After a short stay near Trier , he became director of the Actien-Hüttenwerke Lenne-Ruhr in Altenhundem in autumn 1859 . Four years later he became director of the Steinhauser Hütte in Witten. Richard Peters was chairman of the VDI in 1866 and 1867. During his tenure as chairman of the VDI, he campaigned for a move away from state monitoring of steam boilers to monitoring by monitoring associations. In June 1866 he became director of the coal preparation and coke oven plant of Dupont & Dreyfus near St. Johann . He held this position until his death. He was a member of the editorial team of the journal of the Association of German Engineers in 1868; with the exception of 1865, he had been a permanent member of the board of the technical association for iron and steelwork since 1862.

Richard Peters died of tuberculosis a few days after giving birth to his fourth child . He was a brother of Theodor Peters , who was director of the VDI from 1891 to 1908, and the father of the medical doctor Albert Peters .
