The Caroliner is a small Danish type of coaster from the 1950s.

history

After the end of the Second World War, the Danish coastal ship fleet consisted to a large extent of outdated second-hand tonnage of German and Dutch design, and in part also of wooden coastal sailors. The construction program for the Caroliner ship type was initiated at the time to rejuvenate this fleet with funds from the Marshall Plan . The design came from HC Christensens Staalskibsværft in Marstal, which also built the lion's share of the series with 20 of a total of 23 units. Two ships of the type were built on Svendborg Skibsværft in Svendborg and a Caroliner was built by Skibsværftet Lilleø in Korsør. In addition, two Kümos were built by Christensens in 1956 ( Hjelm ) and 1958 ( Rosenvold ) and four gas tankers ( Sørine Tholstrup , Elsa Tholstrup , Inger Tholstrup and Betty Nordgas ) were built by Svendborg Skibsværft from 1954 to 1958 , the design of which is based on the Caroliner design. The name of the series goes back to the type ship Caroline . Today two Caroliner, the Caroline S and the Samka , are still preserved as museum ships.

technology

The ships have a deckhouse arranged aft above the engine room and a single cargo hold arranged amidships of largely unobstructed form with little undercutting and a raised foredeck. The hatch of the hold is closed with wooden hatch covers and tarpaulins . The load-bearing capacity of the 33.48 meter long and 6.51 meter wide Caroliner is 240 tons with a draft of 2.30 meters. During construction, the ships were given two simple cargo booms , which are arranged in front of and behind the hold.

The drive of the series consists of a 265 hp four-stroke diesel engine , which allows a speed of eight to nine knots. Different models from the manufacturers Vølund Diesel, Callesen, MaK and B&W Alpha-Diesel were used.
