Carpinus chuniana is a small tree from the subfamily of the hazelnut family ( Coryloideae ) with initially densely hairy twigs and with young leaves densely shaggy hairy central rib. The natural range of the species is in China.

description

Carpinus chuniana is a tree up to 10 meters high with black-gray bark . The twigs are reddish brown, initially covered with dense yellow hairs and later balding. The leaves have a 6 to 12 millimeter long, thick and densely hairy stalk. The leaf blade is 7 to 11 inches long and 5 to 5.5 inches wide, elliptical, oblong or obovate-oblong, pointed or long-pointed, with a heart-shaped and sometimes oblique base and a regular or irregular, finely serrated leaf margin. 14 to 18 pairs of nerves are formed. The upper side of the leaf is dense shaggy hairy along the midrib of young leaves and densely covered with point-shaped glands, the underside is shaggy hairy along the veins and shows axillary beards.

The female inflorescences are 5 to 11 inches long with a diameter of about 2.5 centimeters. The inflorescence axis is 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters long, densely coarse and hairy. The bracts are 2 to 2.5 centimeters long, about 1.3 centimeters wide, half-egg-shaped, long pointed and densely shaggy hairy on both sides along the veins. The outer leaf margin is serrated irregularly, the inner part is entire or narrow, finely serrated, with a rolled-up auricle at the base. Four or five first-order leaf veins are formed, the reticulated veins protruding. When fruits are about 4 millimeters long and 3 millimeters wide, egg-shaped wide, densely downy and at the head of shaggy hairy nutlets formed which are sparsely populated with resin glands. Carpinus chuniana flowers from May to June, the fruits ripen from July to August.

Occurrence and location requirements

The natural range is in China in the north of the Guangdong province , in Guizhou and in the southeast of Hubei in subtropical forests on the slopes of the limestone mountains.

Systematics

Carpinus chuniana is a species of the hornbeam genus ( Carpinus ). This is in the family of birch plants of the subfamily (Betulaceae) coryloideae assigned (Coryloideae). The species was first scientifically described by Hu Xiansu in 1932 . The genus name Carpinus comes from Latin and was already used by the Romans for the hornbeam.
