description

Bark of Carpinus kawakamii

Carpinus kawakamii is a tree with dark gray bark . The branches are brown, hairless or sparsely hairy. The leaves have a 0.8 to 1.5 centimeter long, sparsely downy hairy stem. The leaf blade is 4 to 5 inches long and 1.8 to 2.5 inches wide, ovate-lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, acuminate or tail-acuminate, with a more or less rounded or more or less heart-shaped, sometimes oblique base and a regular Double serrated, sometimes just single serrated edge towards the tip of the leaf. Ten to 15 pairs of nerves are formed. The upper side of the leaf is initially sparsely hairy and fluffy, the underside is sparsely shaggy hairy along the leaf veins.

The female inflorescences are 4 to 6 inches long with a diameter of 2 to 2.5 inches. The inflorescence axis is about 1 centimeter long and densely hairy downy. The bracts are 1.8 to 2 inches long, half-egg-shaped and pointed. The leaves have five veins of the first order, the veins arranged like a network are protruding. The outer leaf margin is irregularly serrated, the inner part is straight to more or less sickle-shaped, entire with an egg-shaped, rolled up basal flap 3 millimeters long. The fruits are about 3 millimeters long, broadly egg-shaped, sparsely covered with resin glands, six-fold ribbed nuts with a densely shaggy hairy tip. Carpinus kawakamii flowers from May to June, the fruits ripen from July to August.

Occurrence and location requirements

The natural range is on Taiwan and in the Chinese province of Fujian . There the species grows in subtropical forests at an altitude of 500 to 2000 meters.
