Carpinus rankanensis is a tree of the genus of hornbeam ( Carpinus ) with brown, bare branches and leaves along the veins hairy leaves. The natural range of the species is in Taiwan.

description

Carpinus rankanensis is a tree with dark gray bark . The branches are brown and bare. The leaves have a 5 to 10 millimeter long, bare stem. The leaf blade is 8 to 10 centimeters long, 3 to 4 centimeters wide, oblong, ovate-oblong or elliptical, pointed or tapered, with a heart-shaped base and an irregular, double-bristle serrated leaf margin. 20 to 25 pairs of nerves are formed. The upper side of the leaf is hairy along the midrib, otherwise bald, the underside is hairy along the veins.

The female inflorescences are terminal and 10 to 12 inches long. The inflorescence axis is 2 to 3 millimeters long and hairy with fine bristles. The bracts overlap strongly. They are about 13 millimeters long, 7 millimeters wide, ovate-oblong or lanceolate with a pointed or pointed end and bearded on the underside. The outer leaf margin is closely sawn and rolled up without a basal lobe, the inner part is completely or closely sawn with a small, rolled up basal lobe that envelops the nut. The leaves have three veins of the first order. The leaf veins arranged like a net are inconspicuous. The fruits are about 3.5 millimeters long, elongated or egg-shaped, very weakly ribbed nuts . Carpinus rankanensis flowers from May to June, the fruits ripen from July to August.

Occurrence and location requirements

The natural range is on the island of Taiwan . The species grows in mixed forests at an altitude of 1000 to 2000 meters.
