Carpinus shensiensis is a small tree from the genus of hornbeams ( Carpinus ) with reddish-brown, densely downy hairy twigs and leaves with a bare upper surface and sparsely hairy underside along the veins. The natural range of the species is in China.

description

Carpinus shensiensis is a tree up to 15 meters high with dark gray bark . The twigs are reddish brown and initially dense downy hairs. The leaves have a 7 to 17 millimeter long, densely downy-haired stem. The leaf blade is 6 to 9 inches long, 3 to 4.5 inches wide, oblong or obovate-oblong, with a pointed or pointed end, heart-shaped or sometimes more or less rounded base and a regularly double finely serrated leaf edge. 14 to 16 pairs of nerves are formed. The upper side of the leaf is bare and densely covered with point-like glands, the underside is sparsely downy-haired along the veins and has axillary whiskers.

The female inflorescences are 7 to 9 centimeters long with a diameter of 4 to 4.5 centimeters. The inflorescence axis is 1.5 to 3 centimeters long, densely downy hairy and interspersed with a few long hairs. The bracts are 2.5 to 3 inches long, 1 to 1.2 inches wide, half-egg-shaped with a pointed end. The outer leaf margin is irregularly serrated without a basal lobe, the inner part is entire and has a rolled-up basal auricle . The leaves have four or five veins of the first order and are shaggy hairy along the veins. The cores arranged like a net are protruding. The fruits are about 4 millimeters long, 3 millimeters wide, broadly egg-shaped, clearly ribbed and with shaggy hair at the tip and otherwise bald nuts , which are sparsely covered with brown resin glands. Carpinus shensiensis flowers from May to June, the fruits ripen from July to August.

Occurrence and location requirements

The natural range is in the south of the Chinese provinces of Gansu and Shaanxi . The species grows in forests of the temperate zone at an altitude of 800 to 1000 meters.
