Carteia
Carteia was a Roman port city in Hispania founded by the Phoenicians ; its ruins are in the area of the municipality of San Roque just under 13 km northeast of Algeciras (Portus Albo) near the mouth of the Guadarranque .
history
In the Second Punic War, the Romans defeated in 206 BC. At Carteia the Carthaginian fleet . In 171 BC After the settlement of the descendants of Roman soldiers with Hispanic women, Carteia was the first place outside Italy to become a Roman colony ( Colonia ) under the name Colonia Latina Libertorum . The city, which was always faithful to Rome, owed its economic prosperity to the fish processing plants and the purple snail fishery .
Excavations
First excavations began in the 1960s and continued into the 1990s. The excavation site has been protected as a cultural monument ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) since 1969 and can be visited.

The Museo Monográfico Municipal de Carteia has been located in the city of San Roque since 2001, with numerous exhibits from the ancient city.
