Carwalking

Carwalking

Carwalking or over-Car Walking is a form of protest against the negative impact of car traffic in urban areas, especially where cars irrespective of pedestrians on the sidewalk were parked. A pedestrian engages in carwalking when, with a few quick steps, he crosses a parked vehicle that is hindering him on his way over the hood, roof and trunk.

The appearance of the footwear can very likely cause dents on the roof and bonnet while “car walking”. If these do not spring back or other permanent damage occurs, this constitutes property damage .

History and dissemination

The Munich action artist Michael Hartmann is considered to be the inventor and theorist of artistic carwalking; In 1988 he is said to have run over a car for the first time in Munich. In 1998 Hartmann processed his artistic engagement with wild parked cars and the appropriation of public space as well as the subsequent judicial processes in a book that was published by Unrast-Verlag .

In France, there was a lawsuit for carwalking because a German engineer in Prévessin-Moëns in 2011 stepped over a car that was illegally parked on the side path and that he did not want to squeeze past. At that moment, the owner of the car came and sued the Carwalker for damages.

In Mexico City , Jorge Cáñez has been disguised as a superhero under the name “Peatónito” since 2012, walking over cars or moving them when they block pedestrians.
