The Cascate del Serio to a total height of 315 m as the third-highest waterfall in Italy apply and one of the highest in Europe. It lies a little above the municipality of Valbondione in Lombardy and is formed by the Serio River .
The waterfall consists of three steps, each with a drop height of 166, 74 and 75 meters. It is located in the uppermost Val Seriana not far from the source at an altitude of 1,750 m in the Bergamasque Alps .
In 1931, the Barbellino dam was built near it to generate electricity. The water of the Serio was diverted to the Barbellino reservoir, as a result of which the waterfall fell dry. In 1969 the municipality of Valbondione agreed with the electricity company ENEL that the waterfall should open at a regulated time. The water supply takes place at set times for half an hour on five weekends from June to October. The times can be found on the website of the municipality of Valbondione or Val Seriana.
On the origin of the waterfall says a legend that a young woman was in love in the village in a shepherd who, however, already loved another girl. Out of jealousy, the young woman captured the girl and locked her in a castle. The poor girl began to cry. The flow of tears was so strong that it created the waterfall.
