Caspar Isenmann: Resurrection of Christ , detail, Alsace, 15th century

Caspar Isenmann (French also Gaspard Isenmann ) (* around 1430 in Colmar , † after 1480) was an engraver and painter in Alsace . Around 1435 he was resident in the Grienen Hus in Colmar, where he would later be the teacher of Martin Schongauer . His work, The Resurrection of Jesus Christ, is on display in the Unterlinden Museum . Only a few other pictures have survived, although one can assume that his workshop was active on the basis of his life data.

Stylistic classification

Like Hans Hirtz , Jost Haller and the master of the Stauffenberger Altar , Caspar Isenmann is an important representative of the international Gothic influenced art of Alsace and the entire Upper Rhine region in the 15th century. He shows the influence of new Flemish painting and his work is typical for the inclusion of their innovations in painting style and the natural representation of details. Such an influence can also be seen in the depiction of the background painting, even if aiw still partly uses an archaic gold background. The overall composition of his pictures is reminiscent of the lively theatricality of medieval mystery games as Isenmann staged on behalf of the church in the squares in front of its church buildings.
