The Caspar von Saldern House , which was completed in 1746 for the administrator Caspar von Saldern , is the oldest architectural monument in Neumünster . The Neumünster Music School is located there and it is used regularly for cultural events and exhibitions.

In 1745, when Neumünster was declared an independent office, the new building of the office building in hair was approved. Von Saldern himself worked on the plans of the architect Johann Christian Förster , but probably also the Eutin architect Johann Christian Lewon . So, partly with von Saldern's own financial means, a stately city palace was built in the late Baroque style, which has clear French influences. The building was planned as an office building with an attached living area. A year later, the building was ready for occupancy, back then without the two side wings. There was a fence around the property, connected to it was a farm yard with various stables, a large number of outbuildings that served to manage the farm, a tree garden with a pavilion and lawn terraces. The garden was over 200 meters long and the area reached as far as today's Boostedter Straße. The avenue of lime trees behind the house still bears witness to this baroque garden. However, just a few years after he had moved into the house, von Saldern was relieved of his offices in Neumünster in 1748, so that in 1749 he had to leave the house due to an eviction order. In 1751 von Saldern bought the Schierensee estate .

After the Neumünster office was dissolved in 1867, the building was first used as a district court, then as a savings and loan fund, as the mayor's official residence and as a local museum. During the Second World War, the district leadership of the NSDAP was housed there. In 1947 the building was used as an English officers' mess. This year the two side wings were also created. After the English left the city, the Neumünster Youth Hostel was housed in the building until 1983 . After a renovation, the adult education center was able to use the building.

With financial support from the Caspar-von-Saldern-Haus e. V the building was renovated and reopened in 2006. The Neumünster Music School has been located in the listed building since 2007. Furthermore, cultural events and exhibitions take place here. The garden hall in front of the building can be used as a wedding room.
