Potter grew up in the curling-loving town of Bemidji and joined the sport of curling at the age of five. Her first great successes they celebrated in 1998, when she won the Junior Championship of Minnesota and then at the World Cup took part in the junior and under the leadership of Hope Schmitt finished fifth. Four years later she made her international breakthrough as the skip of her team. Through the US Junior Championship, she and her team also qualified for the 2002 World Championship. Here Potter was able to win the first ever female junior gold medal for the United States. The following year she lost the final against Canada and became vice world champion. In 2005 she led the women's team from the Bemidji Curling Club to the first national championship and the associated qualification for the World Cup and the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin . At the world championship she finished second and only had to admit defeat to the Swedish team in the final. After five losses in the first six encounters, Potter finished eighth at the Winter Olympics.
