The Cassin-class was a four-unit destroyer class of the United States Navy and the first of a total of six destroyer classes that had a displacement of around 1000 ts. The Cassins entered service in 1913. The builders were Bath Iron Works (DD-43 and DD-44), New York Shipbuilding (DD-45) and Fore River Shipbuilding Company (DD-46). The two ships built by Bath Iron Works had , in addition to the two steam turbines, a triple expansion engine for the cruise . The destroyers of the Cassin class were equipped with five 4 "/ 50 guns in single mounts and eight torpedo tubes in four twin sets. Due to the stronger armament compared to the previous Paulding class , the displacement increased to well over 1000 ts and the speed dropped to around 30 kn.

During World War I , the destroyers were used in Europe and escorted American ships to France. After the war ended, the destroyers were launched . In 1924 USS Cassin , USS Commings and USS Downes moved to the United States Coast Guard and served there as CG-1, CG-3 and CG-4. After the ships were returned to the US Navy in 1932 and 1933, they were scrapped in 1934. The USS Duncan , which remained in the US Navy in the reserve fleet , was sold for scrapping in 1935.

The destroyers of the Aylwin class built at the same time are often assigned to the Cassin class, because apart from their slightly higher displacement, they are identical in construction.
