The Paulding-class was a 21-unit destroyer class of the United States Navy and a further development of the Smith class . They entered service in 1909. In 1919 it was decommissioned. 14 ships were then handed over to the United States Coast Guard .

Three years after the commissioning of the first Bainbridge-class and Truxtun-class destroyers , a commission headed by Rear Adm. George A. Converse was established to deal with future requirements for destroyers in the US Navy. One result of the commission was the use of steam turbines instead of the triple expansion machines previously used .

The first units to be influenced by the work of the commission were the 740 ts destroyers of the Paulding class and the previously built Smith class, also known as Flivvers . In addition to the change in drive, the number of 3 "guns was increased from three to five and the 18" torpedoes in single tubes were replaced by three twin tubes. A heightened forecastle and a longer hull compared to the first class of destroyers improved the seaworthiness of the destroyers. In contrast to the five coal-fired units of the Smith-class , the units of the Paulding-class were fueled with oil and had more power. Due to the oil firing and the increase in power, the destroyers were lighter and faster than their predecessors.

The construction contract went to the shipyards William Cramp & Sons , New York Shipbuilding and Bath Iron Works , which had already built the Smith-class destroyers . Then there were the Newport News Shipbuilding and Fore River Shipbuilding Company yards . There were different combinations of propulsion systems within the class. DD-24 - DD-27 as well as DD-30 and DD-31 had three instead of four chimneys.
