The Smith-class was a five-unit destroyer- class of the United States Navy . They entered service in 1909. In 1919 it was decommissioned.

Three years after the commissioning of the first Bainbridge-class and Truxtun-class destroyers , a commission headed by Rear Adm. George A. Converse was established to deal with future requirements for destroyers in the US Navy. One result of the commission was the use of steam turbines instead of the triple expansion machines previously used . The first units to be influenced by the work of the commission were the 740 ts destroyers of the Smith class, also known as Flivvers , and the subsequent Paulding class . In addition to changing the propulsion system, the number of 3 "guns was increased from three to five and the 18" torpedoes were replaced by 21 "torpedoes. A heightened forecastle and a longer hull compared to its predecessors improved the seaworthiness of the destroyers five Smith-class units were coal-fired.

The construction contract went to shipyards William Cramp & Sons (DD-17 and DD-18), New York Shipbuilding (DD-19) and Bath Iron Works (DD-20 and DD-21). The construction costs for the type ship were US $ 585,000. The destroyers were laid down in 1908 and put into service in 1909 and 1910 (DD-18). During the First World War , the ships operated from Brest and took on convoy duties. In 1919 the destroyers were decommissioned.
