The New York Shipbuilding was a shipyard in the United States on the east bank of the Delaware River near Camden , New Jersey .

history

The shipyard was founded in 1899 by Henry G. Morse. The name New York Shipbuilding was chosen because Morse originally wanted to locate the shipyard on Staten Island , NYC. Due to the better infrastructure, however, he then decided on a site near Camden. The shipyard opened in 1900 and the next year the first new building was launched with the motor ship Dollar (later converted as an oil tanker and renamed JM Guffey ). In 1905, the shipyard's first warship, the USS Washington, was completed. Before the First World War , the shipyard received further orders from the United States Navy for several battleships. During the war, the shipyard expanded its capacities on behalf of the United States Shipping Board and built a new shipyard with 50 slipways on Hog Island , PY, making it the world's largest shipbuilder. The ships of the Hog Islander type "A" and "B" were built at the new shipyard until 1921 .

After the First World War, New York Shipbuilding built the USS Saratoga, one of the first aircraft carriers (1922-25v). During World War II , the shipyard built 26 warships for the Navy, including all nine Independence-class carriers and 44 support ships . In addition, 148 landing craft were built in 1942 . New York Shipbuilding employed up to 30,000 people during the war.

After the Second World War, the shipyard continued to build civil and military ships. The military included two Leahy- class cruisers , six Charles F. Adams- class destroyers and the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk . The shipyard also got into the nuclear business. The nuclear cruiser USS Truxtun and three nuclear submarines of the Thresher class were laid down there. In 1962, the nuclear powered passenger / transport ship Savannah was built in the civil sector .

The baggage train USS Camden and the submarine USS Guardfish (SSN-612) were the last New York Shipbuilding ships to be launched in 1967 . The yard is now part of the Camden Freight Port.
