Castanopsis megacarpa is a species of tree fromthe beech family (Fagaceae) that occurs in Southeast Asia. The nuts are edible.

The fruit cups (cupulae) are covered with branched spines . The spines cover the entire surface of the fruit cup. They are erect and pointed. A fruit cup contains one to four nuts that are oval or flattened. The nuts are at least 4 by 2.5 centimeters. The fruit stalk is at least 1.5 inches long.

Flowering time is April. The fruit ripens in September.

Distribution and locations

The species occurs in Thailand , Singapore , Malaysia and Indonesia . It grows in tropical lowland rainforests at 300 to 400 m above sea level.
