Castel Menardo

The Castel Menardo is the ruin of a hilltop castle on the Colle Ciumina in the municipality of Serramonacesca in the Italian province of Pescara , not far from the Abbazia di San Liberatore a Majella .

history

The location of Castel Menardo between the Pescara and Majella rivers suggests a defensive purpose for the fortress against attacks by the Saracens on the neighboring Abazzia di San Liberatore a Majella. The castle must be viewed together with the Torre di Polegra , which is in the diametrically opposite direction to the church.

There are no reliable sources about the castle's origins. The legend ascribes its founding, as well as that of the monastery, to Charlemagne , who had it built to defend the southern border of his empire. Most likely, however, the castle dates back to between the 12th and 14th centuries.

description

The current ruinous condition of the castle makes it difficult to rebuild the building. The floor plan is triangular; at one corner there is a building with a square floor plan, the other two corners were protected by round towers . The structure must have had two floors; There are traces of rooms below the courtyard level.

The castle, which can be seen from the road to the Eremo di Sant'Onofrio (Eng .: Hermitage of Sant'Onofrio), can only be reached via a one kilometer long footpath.
