The Castello di Baron Gamba (also Castello Gamba ) is a castle in the municipality of Châtillon in the Aosta Valley . It is the youngest of the three castles there and dates from the 20th century, while Castello Passerin d'Entrèves and Burg Ussel are both medieval castles. The Castello di Baron Gamba is located on a hill in the western part of the municipality, in the district of Cret-de-Breil near the regional hotel school and is completely surrounded by a park that is open to the public all year round. The castle can be seen clearly from the A5 autostrada . The south side of the castle overhangs the Dora Baltea .

description

The castle is kept in a simple style that mimics the architectural style of earlier castles. It has a compact shape, almost cube-shaped, with a massive tower in the middle that has a square floor plan. The building has four floors. In addition to the main building, an auxiliary building extends to the north, which consists of two parallel structures connected by a vault and thus enclosing a small inner courtyard.

history

The castle is a " mansion " that the engineer Carlo Saroldi designed in 1911 for the Baron Charles-Maurice Gamba and his wife Angélique d'Entrèves , daughter of Count Christin d'Entrèves .

On June 18, 2008, 4,000 spectators gathered in the castle park for Bob Dylan's last concert in Italy.

The castle, which was restored in 2011 and 2012, reopened in late October 2012 and offered the public a new museum design of what it was to become a regional center of modern art. When it reopened, the official name changed to "Castello Gamba".

Museum of modern and contemporary art

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, housed inside the Castello Gamba, is a cultural focal point; there temporary exhibition will take place and it is the seat of the regional especially Pinakothek . The museum was opened on October 27, 2012 at the instigation of the municipality of Châtillon and the regional cultural department.

The permanent exhibition shows around 150 works of contemporary art that were already in the possession of the regional administration and have found their new place in 13 halls on the first and second floors. Some of the works are still waiting to be placed and are being kept in an archive room on the second floor, which can only be visited by prior notice. The third floor and an attic inside the tower in the middle of the castle, on the other hand, are intended for temporary exhibitions and were inaugurated with works by Italo Mus .

The park

The park is between 5 and 7 hectares and is criss-crossed by footpaths with benches and a wooden fountain. There are also three monumental trees that are protected by LR No. 50 of August 21, 1990 called “Protection of Monumental Plants”. The giant sequoia rises next to the castle: it was planted in 1888, is 37 meters high, has a trunk diameter of 230 centimeters and a trunk circumference of 723 centimeters. Nearby, in the middle of the park, there is the approximately 100 year old Judas thorn with a height of 22 meters, a trunk diameter of 81 centimeters and a trunk circumference of 254 centimeters. There is also a bald cypress on the west edge of the park.
