Castello di La Crete

The Castello di La Crête is a hilltop castle next to the parish church of the Doues settlement at the beginning of the Valpelline , a side valley of the Aosta Valley . Today the castle has been converted into a rural house and is not open to the public. The cylindrical tower is a reminder of its earlier function. The castle is recognized with the Diploma dei Castelli d'Italia , No. DCI-AO043.

history

The year of construction of the castle is not known. The first documents about the castle date from 1543, the year in which Nicolas de La Crête alone acquired part of the area and the fief of Doues, which to this day belongs to the castle bailiffs of Quart and the mandate of the Tornalla di Oyace . The castle was ceded by Count Charles-le-Bon for 1500 Italian gold cudos. The same count gave the Quart bailiwick in 1551 to the margrave Charles-François de Balbis , who gained power to redeem the fief of Doues from the La Crêtes , even if he decided not to use it. Nicolas di La Crête bequeathed the castle to his son, Aimé Gaspard .

The La Crête family therefore retained dominion over the castle and fiefdom of Doues and the area alone; her best-known family member was the Baron Jean-François de La Crête , cousin of Aimé Gaspard di La Crête and Prime Minister of Emanuel Philibert and Karl Emanuel I. The daughter of Jean-François de La Crête , Philiberte , married the margrave Adalberto Pallavicini from the noble family Pallavicini , while the baron received in 1574 from the heir of De Balbis and new lord of Quart, Jules-Phèbe , the waiver and the transfer of the right of redemption to the castle with some clauses in 1574 and definitely unlimited in 1581. The baron redeemed the castle from his cousin Aimé Gaspard di la Crête at this point and united the castle and the rule of Doues and Alone under his rule. After the death of Jean-François de La Crête in 1588, the Marquis Pallavicini inherited the castle.
