Castelo Viegas is a Portuguese town and former municipality.

history

The first documented mention of the place comes from the year 1122. There was a watchtower of the security system around the city of Coimbra , to which the place name goes back.

Castelo Viegas was an independent municipality for a long time, until it was merged with the adjacent municipality of Santa Clara to form a new municipality in 2013 .

The former municipality ( Freguesia ) belongs to the district ( concelho ) of Coimbra . The community had a total area of ​​7.5 km² and 1707 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

The former municipality includes four localities:

  • Confraria
  • Marco dos Pereiros
  • Casal de São João

As part of the administrative reorganization in Portugal on September 29, 2013, Castelo Viegas was merged with the municipality of Santa Clara to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Santa Clara e Castelo Viegas . Santa Clara became the headquarters of the new community.
