Castelpoggio is a fraction (district) of Carrara in the province of Massa-Carrara , Tuscany , Italy .

geography

The place is located in the Apuan Alps and is 7 kilometers north of the main town Carrara on the road (SP 73) to Fosdinovo . The place is at 547 m and has about 340 inhabitants.

history

The place was first mentioned in writing in 997. There were Neolithic settlements in the Castelpoggio area where artifacts have been found. Probably the place has been fortified since the time of the Roman Republic, as is the city of Luna .

In 1997, on the occasion of the celebrations for the millennium, a memorial plaque was placed on the portal of the church tower. The place used to be used by pilgrims as a stay on their pilgrimage on the Via Francigena to Rome and there used to be a hospital in the place.

During the Second World War , the site was the scene of bloody clashes. Between March 1944 and April 1945, as a reaction to partisan fighting in Castelpoggio, 33 civilians were killed and parts of the town were set on fire.

At Castalpoggio a red marble , the Rosso di Castelpoggio , is broken.
