Casticus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Casticus (Latin form, celtic. Casticos) was a nobleman among the Sequani in eastern Gaul . It is only known from a passage from Gaius Iulius Caesar's account of the Gallic War . According to Caesar, his father Catamantaloedes had been the ruler of the tribe for many years and was recognized by the Roman Senate as a "friend of the Roman people".

Approx. 60 BC BC Casticus and the noble Haeduer Dumnorix allowed themselves to be persuaded by the Helvetian Orgetorix to try to usurp control over their tribes and over all of Gaul. However, this conspiracy was discovered and stopped by the Helvetians. Caesar does not give any information about the further fate of Casticus.
