Castle Acre Castle is a ruined castle in the village of Castle Acre in the English county of Norfolk . The former moth with extensive earthworks is a Scheduled Monument and English Heritage has listed it as a historical building of the first degree.

history

The castle was built by William de Warenne , the first Earl of Surrey , soon after the Norman conquest of England in 1066 , as his most important property in Norfolk. This first castle was rebuilt in the 1140s. The settlement was strategically placed at the point where an old train path called Peddars Way crosses the Nar River . To the west of the castle was a planned town; the entire settlement was fortified. The place on the river was important for both defense and the supply of goods across the river at a time when land transportation was extremely difficult.

construction

The castle was a moth with a bailey ; up on the mound was the owner's residence and the last refuge in an attack on the castle. The outer bailey below contained the living quarters, stores and workshops. A strong curtain wall with ramparts enclosed the mound and a weaker Wall was on the mound below the castle.

today

The remains of the castle are now managed by English Heritage, along with Castle Acre Bailey Gate and Castle Acre Priory nearby.
