history

The relatively small priory was probably donated in 1089 by William de Warenne, 2nd Earl of Surrey , near Castle Acre Castle . The monks came from Lewes Monastery in East Sussex, which was founded between 1077 and 1081 . In 1537 the priory was withdrawn from the crown under Henry VIII . The ruin has been a listed building since 1929. It is managed by English Heritage along with the nearby Castle Acre Castle ruins .

The facility is located below the castle on a hill. The plan corresponds to the classic Benedictine monasteries: large three-aisled church with transept in the north, then to the south the enclosure with chapter room , cellar and dormitory in the east wing, in the west a building with further cellars, guest building and prior house . The best preserved are the western parts of the church and the east wing, each from the 12th century in Romanesque style . The preserved western parts of the church are of outstanding quality. The decoration of the relatively wide facade on two floors consists almost exclusively of geometric shapes in the Norman style . The facade has a round arched portal. Above it is a large Gothic window in the axis of the nave, which is flanked by a series of low arches. The facade is flanked by two symmetrically arranged tower stumps. The facility can be viewed virtually on Google Maps .
