Castle Crashers is a 2D beat-'em-up from development studio The Behemoth . The Xbox 360 version was released in Germany on August 27, 2008, the PlayStation 3 version only on November 3, 2010. The version for Windows and Mac OS was released on August 16, 2012 exclusively on Steam . It is set in a medieval world in which a dark magician steals a magic crystal and kidnaps four princesses. Four knights are dispatched by the king to bring back the crystal and the princesses.

action

Castle Crashers is set in a medieval comic-style world. At the beginning the player finds himself as one of four knights at a party. But when another knight falls bleeding down the stairs, the four knights have to defend the king's castle from barbarians. But they come too late, so that an evil wizard kidnaps the four daughters of the king, who orders the knights to free the princesses. On their journey the knights fight against all kinds of beings. Each princess is protected by a boss. After all princesses have been freed and the wizard is defeated, the game ends.

Gameplay

Castle Crashers is a beat 'em up with elements of an RPG. There are 31 playable characters available in the game, which you must gradually unlock or purchase through downloadable expansion packs (DLCs). After selecting the character, the player must select the level to be played on a map . After completing a level, the player has the choice to play it again or to switch to another level. The map also shows shops where the character can buy items and weapons with coins captured by opponents.

Castle Crashers supports cooperative play with up to four players, either locally or online. Each of the four can acquire experience points, equipment and weapons. In combat, the player has the choice between close combat and ranged combat. In close combat, the player can attack with many different swords, clubs and axes. In ranged combat, a bow and its magic are available to the player. Each character has a unique magical ability and a life track that shows the rest of the character's life. If this is empty, this means in single player mode that the player has to start the level again, in multiplayer the other players can revive him.

The characters collect experience points by killing opponents, which they use to level up. In each level won, the player receives points that he can invest in one of the four attributes. He can choose between strength, magic, defense and agility. The numerous weapons in the game also have positive and negative effects on the attributes of the characters. The player can find animals to accompany and support him in battle or to improve the attributes. In addition to the main game, Castle Crashers also offers some mini-games for up to four players.
