The Cat Arm River is a 47 km long river in the south of the Great Northern Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland, which belongs to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .

River course

The Cat Arm River has its source in the Long Range Mountains at an altitude of 600  m . It flows mainly in a south-southeast direction through the highlands. After almost 20 kilometers it flows into the northwest end of the Cat Arm Reservoir , a reservoir that was built between 1982 and 1985. The associated dam is located 18 km above the mouth of the Cat Arm River. Since then, the water has been fed directly to the Cat Arm hydropower station on the east coast of the Great Northern Peninsula. In the lower reaches of the Cat Arm River there is only a small amount of water. The Cat Arm River flows in a predominantly east-northeast direction to the head of the Great Cat Arm , a nearly 10 km long fjord-like bay that opens up to White Bay . The catchment area of the river system covers around 650 km². Before the dam was built, the mean discharge was 27.6 m³ / s, with the largest amounts of water being discharged in May and June at 96.8 and 72.8 m³ / s, respectively.
