Catacombs is a funeral doom project founded in New Jersey in 2003 .

history

John "Xathagorra Mlandroth" del Russi was already active in the extreme metal scene of New Jersey before the founding of Catacombs. The projects Hierophant , Inimical or Sect received particular attention from the press, which specializes in various aspects of Doom Metal , due to the EPs and split albums that have been published. After del Russi had ceased activities under the band name Hierophant, he founded the funeral doom band Catacombs, which was conceptually based on the Cthulhu myth , in around 2003 . The first release under the name Catacombs was a self-titled demo CD, which was released in the same year as an EP under the title Echoes Through the Catacombs again by Antinomian and in 2007, expanded to include new recordings of the two pieces contained, by Solitude Productions . The EP received positive reviews as a demo. However, the publication received little attention. With the subsequent release of In the Depths of R'lyeh via Moribund Records in 2006 , the perception of the project changed and Catacombs received internationally positive reviews for the album. At times the album has been described as an essential release in the genre. Only occasionally was the album judged negatively as an "uninspired, annoying and boring cliché work". After In the Depths of R'lyeh , only re-releases of the already well-known Catacombs work appeared for a long time. It wasn't until 2016 that del Russi released the track Into the Dismal Shades as a download on his own label Xathagorra Industries . Further publications under the band name Catacombs failed to materialize.

style

The music presented by Catacombs is attributed to Funeral Doom. Genre representatives such as Evoken , Disembowelment , Winter , Esoteric , Skepticism , Thergothon and Tyranny are used as a comparison.

Drumming is described as emphatically slow. "Every snare , every kick and crash can be heard in isolation". In addition to the drums, which are played in a reduced manner, there is a guitar playing described as "extremely low-pitched" and the deep guttural singing . The music is presented with a lack of dynamism and persistent monotony, which in turn has a “minimalist aesthetic” and describes a “kind of meditative musical state”.
