The Cataract Covered Bridge is a covered wooden bridge in Owen County , Indiana . It spans Mill Creek in Jennings Township above Cataract Falls .
The bridge became necessary after a flood in August 1875 destroyed a previous bridge. The Cataract Covered Bridge was built by the Smith Bridge Company from Toledo . It is about 140 ft (42.7 meters) long and has been in use for over 100 years. Vehicles have been using a new upstream concrete bridge since 1988. In 2004 a fundamental renovation took place.
In Owen County the Cataract Covered Bridge is the last of its kind. In Indiana there are six bridges with a timber framework patented by Robert W. Smith. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 27, 2005 as a Historic Monument .
