history

Before the arrival of the Europeans, the region of today's township was inhabited by Indian tribes of the Miami , Shawnee and Potawatomi .

The first European settler was Isaac Teal, who built a mill on the lower Cataract Falls around 1820. In 1841, Theodore Jennings, a relative of Jonathan Jennings , Indiana's first governor, acquired the area. He built a sawmill and flour mill, general store, blacksmith shop and other facilities. In addition to the plants on Mill Creek, maple syrup was harvested in Jennings Township and cleared areas were used as pastures. After the sawmill and the mills were closed, their economic importance declined.

The Jennings Township is home to the Cataract Covered Bridge , a covered bridge built in 1876 that has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2005 .
