Catocala actaea is a butterfly found in East Asia( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).

The moths reach a wingspan of 52 to 60 millimeters. The basic color of the marbled forewing upper side shows dark gray tones. Ring and kidney flaws are only indistinctly recognizable, only the sub kidney flaws are clearly highlighted in light gray. The upper side of the hind wing is black and shows a wide white band that extends from the middle of the front edge to behind the cell . There is also a white spot near the anal corner . The fringes are checked in black and white. The undersides of the wings show a black and white band drawing.
Similar species
Catocala nagioides differs in the slightly lighter fore wing base color as well as the slightly shorter white band and the smaller white spot on the upper side of the hind wing.
distribution and habitat
Catocala actaea occurs in Japan , Korea , the extended Ussuri region and in eastern China. In the Shanxi province it is represented by the subspecies Catocala actaea nigricans . The species primarily inhabits mountainous terrain.
Way of life
The nocturnal, univoltine moths are mainly found between July and September. You visit artificial light sources and baits . The caterpillars feed on the leaves of oaks , for example the Japanese chestnut oak ( Quercus acutissima ), the Mongolian oak ( Quercus mongolica ) or the Chinese cork oak ( Quercus variabilis ).
