Catocala dilecta is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 78 to 84 millimeters. This makes them one of the larger species within the genus of ribbons ( Catocala ). The forewings are mostly dark brown in color. The black outer transverse line is marked by a clear inwardly directed point near the inner edge and a distinctive outwardly directed double point in the upper part. Blemishes hardly stand out from the ground. The hind wings are bright red and have a wide black band and a strongly wavy black central band, which usually reaches the inner edge. On the underside of the hind wings there is usually a strong black line from the center spot through the discoid cell to the base of the wing.

egg

The hemispherical egg is dark brown to reddish brown in color and has white and yellow pits. It's not ripped. The central rosette is surrounded by two to five wreaths of leaves.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars come in a brownish, gray, or greenish-gray color. On the eighth segment there is a transverse bulge and small reddish warts along the entire length.

Doll

The slender, brown doll is covered with whitish hoop and shows four longer and a few short hooked bristles on the wrinkled cremaster .

Similar species

There is a great similarity to the somewhat smaller Great Oak Carmine ( Catocala sponsa ), whose wingspan is 68 to 74 millimeters. This is also distinguished by light spots in the area of the kidney defects and the wavy black central band on the hind wings, which does not reach the inner edge. Another distinguishing feature is that the strong black line from the center spot through the discoid cell to the wing base on the underside of the hind wings is mostly missing.

The large species of red ribbon ( Catocala nupta ) (wingspan 78 to 84 millimeters) and poplar carmine ( Catocala elocata ) (wingspan 80 to 86 millimeters) are easier to distinguish, as the front wings tend to be more gray-brown and the black central band on the hind wings less is very wavy.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is sparsely distributed from northwest Africa through southern Europe to Asia Minor . The northernmost occurrence affects some regions in the center of France and in the east of Austria . Older details from Baden-Württemberg are likely to be incorrect determinations or mix-ups. The preferred habitat of the species are open oak forests.

Way of life

The main flight time for the moths is from July to September. At night they like to fly to the bait and occasionally artificial light sources . The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various oak species ( Quercus ). They develop between April and June. The egg is hibernating.
