Catocala disjuncta is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).
features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moth is 41 to 44 millimeters. The upper side of the forewings shows various shades of brown and a gray over-dusting. The outer transverse line is black-brown and has a long, inwardly directed tip close to the inner edge . The kidney blemish is partially lightly filled and clearly stands out. The upper side of the hind wing has a yellow color, a wide, black-brown outer band and a narrower, slightly curved central band of the same color, which kinks sharply at the end.
Caterpillar
The caterpillars are light gray in color and marbled with small dark dots on the entire body surface. They also show reddish colored warts on their backs. The head is red-brown and has two whitish crescent-shaped stripes and a blackish netting.
Similar species
- The similar species Catocala diversa differs from Catocala disjuncta by the lack of gray over-dusting on the upper side of the forewing and the not kinked inner middle band on the upper side of the hind wing. Catocala diversa is also larger with a wingspan of 47 to 49 millimeters.
- Catocala separata is much darker in overall appearance.
distribution and habitat
Catocala disjuncta occurs locally from Southeastern Europe to Asia Minor. The species primarily inhabits warm, light oak forests and steppe slopes.
Way of life
The moths are mainly found in June and July. You visit artificial light sources and baits . The caterpillars live from April to June and feed on the leaves of various oak species ( Quercus ). The species overwinters as an egg.
