Catocala separata is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).
features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moth is 37 to 40 millimeters. Catocala separata is the smallest and darkest of the Catocala species with yellow hind wings. The forewing upper side shows different, mostly dark brown tones. The outer transverse line is blackish brown and has an inwardly directed tip close to the inner edge . The kidney blemish is partially lightly filled and clearly stands out. The upper side of the hind wing has a dirty yellow color, a wide, black-brown outer and a narrow, slightly curved central band of the same color, which kinks sharply at the end.
Caterpillar, pupa
The caterpillars are colored light gray and drawn with small dark dots on the entire surface of the body. They also show reddish colored warts on their backs. The head is red-brown and has two whitish crescent-shaped stripes and a blackish netting. The red-brown pupa is frosted blue and white.
Similar species
The similar Catocala disjuncta differs from Catocala separata by the much lighter overall appearance with strong yellow colored hind wings.
distribution and habitat
Catocala separata occurs locally from Southeastern Europe to Asia Minor. The species primarily inhabits warm, light, evergreen oak forests near the coast and steppe slopes.
Way of life
The moths are mainly found in June and July. You visit artificial light sources and baits . The caterpillars live from April to June and feed on the leaves of various oak species ( Quercus ). The species overwinters as an egg.
