Catocala diversa is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).
features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moth is 47 to 49 millimeters. The upper side of the forewing shows different shades of brown. The outer transverse line is black-brown and jagged. The basal field is slightly darkened, while the disc region is a little brighter. The ring flaw is partially lightly filled and clearly stands out. The upper side of the hind wing has a yellow color, a wide, black-brown outer and a narrow, slightly curved central band of the same color. The middle band is not kinked at the end.
Caterpillar
The caterpillars are pale gray in color. They show some dark drawing elements, but no hump-like elevations as in many other Catocala species, but a slight dorsal protuberance on the eighth segment.
Similar species
The similar species Catocala disjuncta differs from Catocala diversa by the more jagged outer transverse line on the upper side of the forewing and the clearly kinked black-brown inner central band on the upper side of the hind wing.
distribution and habitat
Catocala diversa occurs locally in southern and southeastern Europe to southern Russia and Asia Minor . The species mainly inhabits oak bush forests.
Way of life
The moths are mainly found between June and August. You visit artificial light sources and baits . The caterpillars live from April to June and feed on the leaves of various oak species ( Quercus ). The species overwinters as an egg.
