Catocala micronympha is a butterfly found in North America( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae). The specific epithet is derived from the Greek words μικρός and νύμφη with the meanings "small" and " nymph ". In English usage, the species is called the Little Nymph Underwing .

The moths reach a wingspan of 35 to 50 millimeters. The basic color of the forewing upper side shows different shades of brown. The light gray wing tip is striking . The submarginal region is usually also essentially light gray. Cross lines and blemishes are indistinct. Only the sub-kidney flaws sometimes stand out a little brighter. The upper side of the hind wing varies from yellow to orange and shows a wide black band as well as a black, wavy central band.
Similar species
With a wingspan of 55 to 72 millimeters, the moths of the similarly drawn Catocala are significantly larger inside .
distribution and habitat
Catocala micronympha occurs widely to locally in the eastern and some central regions of North America. The species primarily inhabits oak forests.
Way of life
The nocturnal, univoltine moths can be found between April and September, depending on their geographical occurrence, mainly in May. You visit artificial light sources and baits . During the day they rest on tree trunks with their wings folded over their abdomen. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various oak species ( Quercus ), including large-fruited oak ( Quercus macrocarpa ), Virginia oak ( Quercus virginiana ) and Quercus stellata .
